I never really loved gin until Nathan started having me try some of his stuff. He definitely has more of a tolerance for stiff gin drinks such as our Classic Gin Martini and even though I will always have a taste, I never want a full one. This drink I crafted is a delightfully refreshing celebration of basil and gin working in harmony with a splash of grapefruit and a mild fizziness to it. This is definitely meant for the warmer months and can, and should, be made by the pitcher!
Start by chilling a rocks glass in the freezer with a giant ice cube if you can get your hands on one. Either using store bought or fresh grapefruit juice, we need to end up with 1/2 cup of juice with no pulp or seeds.
Once you have your grapefruit juice, use a tall mixing glass to muddle 3-4 of your basil leaves. Keep one of the larger ones on the side so you can use it for your garnish in the drink.
If you haven't already, strain the pulp and seeds out of our grapefruit juice and add it in with the basil in your mixing glass. Add in your drops of bitters as well as your gin and fill with ice. Stir gently until the drink is ice cold.
Take the basil leaf you left behind for the garnish and smack it (yes, literally smack it!) to get the aromas out of it and place in chilled rocks glass. Strain the drink into your glass and top it off with your seltzer. Enjoy!
